Prehistoric cave paintings depicting human groups show the emergence of a complex society early in the region’s history and an advanced Iberian culture developed here. There were Greek settlements along the coast before it was conquered by the Romans. Catalonia was one of the first areas of Spain to free itself from the Moors and, as a result, there evolved a very distinct regional culture. Medieval Barcelona was at the heart of the Mediterranean Empire which stretched to Italy and Greece.
