Prehistoric Wessex
Summary
Stonehenge, Avebury and West Kennet long barrow
Wessex’s rolling chalk downlands were once the ceremonial heartland of prehistoric Britain – focus of such intense ritual activity that the resulting monuments have defined this area ever since. Henges, causewayed camps, burial mounds, early field systems, and even ‘cursus’ monuments are scattered everywhere, forming a distinct landscape of rites and ritual.
