Summary

Dating back almost 6,000 years, prehistoric 'abstract' carvings are found on boulders and outcrops in often remote locations across northern Britain. The meaning of these carvings still eludes us, but recent research has shed new light on who might have created them and why. The day will begin with a short introductory lecture at St James’ Church Centre, Alnwick. Tertia will introduce you to the work she and her colleagues have been doing to identify, record and preserve these prehistoric engravings, and can discuss the latest ideas about their significance to our Neolithic and Bronze Age ancestors. You then will take our private coach for the day, and head into the wild Northumberland countryside to visit some of the most elaborate and enigmatic carvings known in this country. You will be walking for most of the day over rough and uneven terrain, with views of other prehistoric monuments such as Bronze Age burial cairns and Iron Age hillforts en route. Come prepared for all weathers!

Tour highlights:

  • Some of the best examples of prehistoric abstract art in Britain in beautiful Northumberland countryside
  • Introductory lecture by a leading British expert, with explanations of every site
  • Private coach to sites difficult to find without a guide, and some bracing walks to reach them lunch included
