We have eight dedicated historical tours on offer for 2021, which range from short breaks in the UK that delve into the lives of monarchs to European explorations of specific eras and movements.

The Face of Evil

Follow the harrowing story of Nazi Germany, beginning with the party’s birth in the beer halls of 1919 Munich and ending with the Third Reich’s demise, in the ruins of 1945 Berlin. Let Hitler’s lift whisk you to the summit of Kehlstein mountain for lunch with amazing views, tour the remains of the Berghof and explore a variety of notorious sites that have historic links to the Nazi regime and its downfall.

The Normans

The Normans were a phenomenon for five centuries, controlling vast areas of France, England, Ireland, Wales, the island of Sicily and providing guards for the Ottoman Sultans in Constantinople. This week-long trip will take us to Normandy and help us to understand these people on their home soil because even a thousand years on, the mark which they left is still there in Normandy.

Culloden: The Battle that Shaped Britain

The Battle of Culloden on 16th April 1746 shaped the future of Great Britain, with the post Culloden ‘pacification’ of the Highlands, the clan system eviscerated, disarming, the banning of highland dress, and far-reaching shifts in land ownership resulting in the Clearances. In this tour, we’ll explore the short period from Prince Charles Edward Stuart’s hopeful arrival in the Highlands in August 1745, until the crushing of Jacobite hopes at Culloden eight months later.

Henry VIII – Making of a Tyrant

Travel with a leading authority on Tudor history – Dr Suzannah Lipscomb, former curator at Hampton Court Palace – as we chart the rise and fall of Henry VIII from acclaimed, athletic young king to paranoid and cruel monarch. We examine loves, politics and perils at Henry’s court; war; the dissolution of the monasteries, the establishment of the Church of England and of course Henry’s colourful marital history.

Richard III – Hero or Villain?

This wide-ranging tour of all the significant surviving sites linked with Richard takes in battlefields, castles, cathedrals and churches culminating in a visit to the King’s striking new tomb. Led by top medieval historian Dr Michael Jones, this tour is a must, not only for Richard’s fans and foes, but for anyone interested in one of English History’s most tragic, bloody and colourful epochs – our very own ‘Game of Thrones’.

Wartime Britain – Dogfights and Double Agents

This tour explores nerve centres of the Battle of Britain, at the headquarters of RAF Fighter Command, Bentley Priory and the Uxbridge Bunker from where Air Vice-Marshal Park controlled the fight to protect London and the South-East of England. But we start with the ultra-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park to learn how German agents were turned to double-cross their paymasters in Berlin.

T. E. Lawrence in Dorset

We will use our visits to ‘Lawrence sites’ in Dorset – his home at Cloud’s Hill, his tomb effigy at Wareham and burial place at Moreton, and the home of his friend Thomas Hardy at Max Gate – to explore the character and role of TE Lawrence, and attempt to sift fact from fiction. Our tour also includes special access to Lawrence material held at the Tank Museum at Bovington, and a fresh viewing of the 1962 David Lean movie.
